When Does IRCTC Booking Open?

Different quotas open at different times. The calculator above covers the general (ARP) quota; the table below is a quick reference for the rest.

General / ARP quota8:00 AM IST60 days before journey (journey date excluded)

How the 60-Day Rule Works

The Advance Reservation Period (ARP) is the window during which you can book a train ticket before travelling. As of 1 November 2024 the standard ARP is 60 days, excluding the date of journey— reduced from the earlier 120-day window. To find your booking date, simply subtract 60 days from your travel date.

Worked example

Travelling on 15 July 2026? Counting back 60 days lands on 16 May 2026. Booking opens that morning at 8:00 AM IST, including Sundays and public holidays.

  • The journey date itself is not counted in the 60 days.
  • Use the date the train departs its originating station— important for trains that cross midnight.
  • Popular routes can sell out within minutes — log in a few minutes before 8:00 AM and keep your passenger details saved in the IRCTC Master List.

Tips to Book Successfully

Be ready before 8:00 AM

Log in 5–10 minutes early. The first few minutes after opening decide whether you see Available, RAC, or Waiting List.

Save passenger details

Pre-save travellers in the IRCTC Master List and keep a fast payment method (UPI or saved card) ready to finish before stock runs out.

Set a reminder

Use the “Add reminder to Google Calendar” button above so you get an alert on the exact morning booking opens.

Have a backup plan

If the general quota sells out, check Tatkal the day before travel (10:00 AM AC, 11:00 AM Sleeper) or alternative trains and dates.

Frequently Asked Questions

General (ARP) quota booking opens at 8:00 AM IST on the opening day, every day of the week including Sundays and public holidays.

No. The journey date is excluded, so the calculator simply subtracts 60 days from your travel date to find the opening day.

Tatkal is a separate last-minute quota that opens one day before the journey — 10:00 AM IST for AC classes and 11:00 AM IST for Sleeper and other non-AC classes. The 60-day rule applies only to the general quota.

It applies to most trains. Some short-distance day trains use a shorter period, the Foreign Tourist quota allows up to 365 days, and special or festival trains may follow their own schedule.

Enter the date the train departs its originating station. The advance reservation period is calculated from that departure date, which matters most for trains that run past midnight.
